This article explains how to use the InMail Message and InMail Follow-up Message actions inside your campaigns. It covers open profile checks, credit usage, follow up logic, and what happens when credits run out.

What this feature allows you to do

You can add an InMail Message step and an InMail Follow-up Message step inside your sequences. The system automatically checks whether a contact is an open profile, and then decides whether to send a free InMail or use credits.

Step 1: Choose your list

Start by creating a new campaign and selecting your audience. You can:

  • Paste a LinkedIn search results link.

  • Select a saved list.

Then go to the Sequences tab.

Step 2: Add the Send InMail Message action

When you choose this action you will see two paths based on the contact type.

Option 1. If open profile

The system checks if the person is an open networker.
If yes, a free InMail can be sent.
You must enter:

  • InMail subject

  • InMail message content

Any contact who qualifies will receive the free InMail.

(Please see the below screenshot for reference)

Option 2. If not open profile

For contacts who are not open profiles, you choose what happens next.

You will see two main choices:

A. Send with InMail credits

If selected, the system uses your LinkedIn InMail credits. Most premium LinkedIn accounts have a monthly limit of 50 credits.
After choosing this option two additional settings appear:

  1. Stop when credits run out and wait for reset
The campaign pauses this step until LinkedIn resets your credits. After credits refresh, the system continues sending.

  2. Skip this step and continue
The system skips this step once credits reach zero and continues to the next step in your sequence.

(Please see the below screenshot for reference)

B. Skip

The system skips this step for all contacts who are not open profiles.

(Please see the below screenshot for reference)

Step 3: Add the Send InMail Follow-up Message action

This step becomes available only when the previous step is an InMail Message.

The follow up has its own logic for open profiles and not open profiles.

Option 1. If open profile

You cannot send a follow up InMail to an open networker because LinkedIn does not allow sending more than one free InMail to them.
For these contacts the condition is based on whether they replied.

You will see two actions:

  1. Skip the step
This is the default since most users do not want to send a follow up after a reply.

  2. Send follow up message
This option exists for flexibility, although it is not common.
If selected, you enter the follow up content.
No credit is used because open profiles receive only one free InMail per sequence.

Option 2. If not open profile

For contacts who are not open profiles you have two choices:

(Please see the below screenshot for reference)

  1. Skip the step
The system skips the follow up for these contacts.

  2. Send InMail using credits
In this case the system uses an additional InMail credit to send the follow up message.
You will enter the follow up message content.
One credit is used per follow up.

(Please see the below screenshot for reference)

Note: The same credit handling rules apply as earlier. If credits run out and you selected the credit option here, the system will either stop and wait or skip the step depending on your earlier settings.

Step 4: Continue building the campaign

After the follow up step you can add more actions like messages, connection requests, or email steps.
If your goal is to send only one InMail plus one follow up, you can end the sequence here.

How the system processes InMails and follow ups

  1. For each contact the system checks open profile status.

  2. If open profile

    • First message uses a free InMail.

    • Follow up depends on the reply condition and your selected action.

  3. If not open profile

    • Credits are used for the first InMail if selected.

    • Credits can also be used for the follow up if selected.

  4. Credit rules are applied at any step that uses InMail credits.

  5. The sequence proceeds to the next step according to your settings.

Tips for best results

  • Use clear subjects and short messages.

  • Personalize the body text and subject with spintax.

  • Plan your credit usage carefully if your list is large.

  • Use skip logic if you want to conserve credits.

  • Monitor reply rates and adjust follow up timing.
