AI content variable

Learn how to set up the AI content variable to write a unique message for each contact from your own custom field data.

Written by Alex

The AI content variable writes a full, tailored message for each contact by combining several details you bring into We-Connect. You choose which custom fields it should draw on and give it an instruction, and it writes original copy for every person that weaves those details together, instead of you writing one template for everyone.

Because it draws on several details at once, it shines in fuller messages: InMail, email, and LinkedIn follow-ups, where you have room to say something specific to each person.

Common use cases

It fits any outreach where you already hold several details about each contact. For example:

  • Inbound lead follow-up. Combine the product they signed up to try, their company size, and their stated goal into a follow-up that speaks to what they actually want.

  • Event or webinar follow-up. Combine the event they attended, the session topic, and their role into a message that picks up where the event left off.

  • Re-engaging cold leads. Combine the last topic you discussed, their product interest, and where the deal stalled into a message that restarts the conversation naturally.

The rest of this article follows the first example.

How it works

Three things come together to produce each message:

  • Your data stored in custom fields, one per detail you care about.

  • The fields you choose to send to the AI, usually several at once.

  • Your instruction telling the AI how to use them.

Take the inbound lead follow-up. Each lead record holds the product they signed up to try, their company size, and the goal they gave on the signup form. You point the AI at those three fields and instruct it to write a follow-up that ties them together. Each lead then receives a message built around what they actually asked for, not a generic "just checking in."

Step 1: Bring your data in

The AI can only use details you give it, so start by getting your data into We-Connect.

  1. Create a custom field for each detail you want to use, for example product_interest, company_size, and stated_goal.

  2. Import your CSV or sync your CRM, and map each column to its custom field.

Every contact now carries your data, ready for the AI to use.

Step 2: Set up the variable

  • Name it. The name becomes the token you insert, such as [AI_MESSAGE].

  • Pick the channel. LinkedIn message, InMail, or Email. The variable writes the message body to suit it.

  • Write the instruction. In plain language, tell the AI what to write and how to use your fields, for example: "Write a follow-up email that references the product they signed up to try and their goal, and shows how we help a team their size."

  • Add offer context. Pulled from your Business Snapshot so the AI knows your product and offer.

  • Set the tone and length.

Step 3: Choose the fields

Only the fields you add here are sent to the AI. This is where you decide which details each message is built from. Add several to give the AI enough to work with.

  • Click Add field and search for a field.

  • Your custom fields appear alongside the standard ones, tagged as custom so they are easy to find.

  • Add the details you want combined, and remove any you do not.

Step 4: Preview, then insert

Preview shows the message for a real contact, along with the exact fields the AI received. Step through several contacts, including any with missing details, to check how the messages read.

When you are happy, insert the token into your message step. At send time, the token is replaced by the message written for each contact, using their latest synced data. Your draft shows the token; the sent message shows the finished text.

Use the arrows to step through other contacts. When a contact is missing a detail, the AI leaves that part out instead of guessing, and notes what it skipped.

What keeps the messages accurate

The AI writes only from the fields you added and never invents a detail. If a field is empty for a contact, it leaves that part out rather than guessing. This matters most when several details are combined: a made-up fact is worse than a shorter message, so gaps are never filled with guesses.

Subjects for email and InMail

On channels with a subject line, email and InMail, the variable writes the body, not the subject. Write the subject yourself, or once the body has content, use the AI Subject Spintax button on the subject field to generate one from the body. It is optional.
